Today we thought it would be fun to take a look at some of the poster for the subject of our latest episode, 1993’s The Crush, staring Alicia Silverstone and Cary Elwes. Like most of the marketing for the film, there is very little variation in the imagery, but we thought it would still be fun to take a look at the various posters, if only to see what the film was re-titled as in other countries. So let’s start by taking a look at the main one-sheet for the flick from 1993…

We definitely mentioned our thoughts on the poster in the episode, but to rehash, we all really dug the high contrast design of Silverstone’s Darian with Cary Elwes’ Nick reflected sort of concerned and clueless in her Lolita-esque sunglasses. The bright pink shadows and the pink and blue in her glasses and on her lips are just a perfect color scheme against the all white background. Of course seeing it on practically every poster does get a bit repetitive.

Here’s the German version where the film was re-titled Das Biest (The Beast). It’s a tiny thing, but I thought it was hilarious that whoever was doing the graphic design on the filmmaking block at the bottom changed Cary Elwes to Cary El Wes…

In Spain the movie was re-titled Veneno en la Piel (or Poison on the Skin.) I also found it interesting that the tagline of the film on this poster directly invokes other similar films of the time including Lolita, Fatal Attraction, and The Hand that Rocks the Cradle. Also, apparently Cary Elwes was definitely the big draw here as his name is placed above the title, something that you really don’t see in any of The Crush marketing.

Lastly there is a very different take on the poster, not surprisingly from out friends in Japan (who usually have interesting and weird posters for the American films). It’s a little busy, but man, do I love the addition of the publicity still placed in the shattered frame. *UPDATE* Thanks to @tsdcx (Tuesday) on Twitter for letting us know that the film was apparently re-titled Darian in Japan!
